1. Out of two expressions, one expression must contain a variable.

2. Even if we interchange the expression, the value remains unchanged.

**Write the following statements in the form of equation:**

**Question 1 - ** Five times of "x" is 15

**Solution - ** This proceeds as :

Five times of "x" = 5x

The resultant equation we get;

5x = 15

**Question 2 - ** Sum of 4 times "x" and 2 is 10

**Solution - ** This proceeds as :

Four times of "x" = 4x.

Sum of 4x and 2 = 4x + 2

The resultant equation we get;

4x + 2 = 10

**Question 3 - ** Subtract 2 from 4 times of "x" and we get 10

**Solution - ** This proceeds as :

Four times of "x" = 4x.

Subtract 2 from 4x = 4x - 2

The resultant equation we get;

4x - 2 = 10

**Question 4 - ** One third of "x" is 15

**Solution - ** This proceeds as :

One third of "x" = 1/3x

The resultant equation we get;

1/3x = 15

**Definition:** Algebraic Equation is a condition where two expressions have equal values.

**Examples: **

4x + 2 = 8

15 = 5x

x/2 = 8

3x - 2 = 4

**Points to note:**

Five times of "x" = 5x

The resultant equation we get;

5x = 15

Four times of "x" = 4x.

Sum of 4x and 2 = 4x + 2

The resultant equation we get;

4x + 2 = 10

Four times of "x" = 4x.

Subtract 2 from 4x = 4x - 2

The resultant equation we get;

4x - 2 = 10

One third of "x" = 1/3x

The resultant equation we get;

1/3x = 15
