Define Average

Definition
An Average is representation of a group in a single value.

To find an average of a group :-
Step 1 = Sum all the observations of the given group.
Step 2 = Divide the sum(of step 1) by the number of observations of the given group.

Above steps give formula for finding Average :
Average = (Sum of Observations) ÷ (Number of Observations)
= Sum of Observations/Number of Observations

Following are some examples of Averages

Example 1 = Find the average of given numbers 10, 20, 30, 40.
Answer = The proceed is as :-
Sum of observations = 10 + 20 + 30 + 40     = 100
Number of observations = 4
Average of given numbers = sum of observations / number of observations
= 100 / 4     = 25

Example 2 = Find the average of first five natural numbers.
Answer = First Five Natural Numbers = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Average of First Five Natural Numbers = sum of first five natural numbers / number of natural numbers
= (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5) / 5
= 15 / 5       = 3

Example 3 = Mark obtained by 4 student in a class are 20, 35, 42, 13,Find the average marks obtained by them.
Answer = Average Marks Obtained = sum of marks / number of students
= (20 + 35 + 42 + 13) / 4
= 110 / 4       = 27.5
